First envisioned in 2021/2022 by local resident Menzi Dlamini (middle), the project sought to reimagine the hospital environment as a place of comfort, warmth, and hope for young patients facing extended hospital stays. That vision came to life over a single weekend, completed in just two days through the dedication and collaboration of Pietermaritzburg-based artists Siyabonga Sikosana (left) and Thobani Shozi (right).
Working side by side from dawn to dusk, the artists created a large-scale mural inspired by local heritage and landscapes, including the surrounding mountains. The artwork not only revitalised the physical space but also restored a sense of humanity within the ward, offering children moments of joy, imagination and emotional relief during challenging times.
Beyond the mural itself, the initiative has been documented in an upcoming short documentary that captures the deeply human story behind the transformation. The film highlights the power of vision, community collaboration and art as a tool for healing and social impact.
The documentary will be released soon. Stay tuned for updates.
